Home Nurses Best When Taking Care Of The Elderly
Very few elderly people are healthy and even though they have taken care of their health in the past, there is always a chance that they will fall victim to some disease or the other. This is very normal as the immunity to disease will reduce as a person ages. For a number of elderly people, it is not easy to take care of themselves at that age. It is also quite a burden for relatives to take care of them because they will be required to take quit sometime out of their schedule to do so. The burden is even greater when the elderly person is suffering from a disease that requires special expertise when it comes to taking care of the person.
A disease that is very common amongst elderly people is Alzheimer's. This is a disease where it becomes nearly impossible for the person suffering from it to take care of themselves. It becomes essential for these people to get help from relatives. But this is very tedious for relatives as it is very time consuming and at the same time need to be at the beck and call of the person suffering from Alzheimer's. A solution to this could be Home Care. A person suffering from Alzheimer's tends to wander around and suddenly will find themselves lost. This is very frustrating and having a nurse to take care of such a person is a great help.
There are many elderly people who are not fond of staying in retirement homes and are most comfortable and happy while within the four walls of their home. This is quite understandable as there is no better comfort than in your own house. There are also a number of tough decisions that are required to be made and this will not be possible for a person that has no medical experience to make. During these times, it is always much easier for a nurse to make these decisions. It is also a very difficult time for the family members emotionally especially at the time when the patient is on his/her deathbed. It is even more difficult if it is the first time there is a death in the family.
These nurses are definitely not professionals in their field but they are experienced in handling these situations and are liable to make much better decisions as there is no emotional connection with the patient. These home nurses could be working individually or even be working with a firm. Many firms train their nurses with grief counseling as well as emotional support. Sometimes these nurses may get so emotionally attached to the patient that they will mourn along with the grieving family and will go out of their way to help the family.
An assignment that has been assigned to a home nurse has no stipulated duration and normally starts during the last few months of a person's life. But in few cases it has been seen that if a person's health does not deteriorate, this assignment could even last for a couple of years. It is very important that you choose a nurse who is willing to go out of their way in taking care of the patient and not just wanting to make a quick buck.
